Introducing

The Founders

Rukmini Guha is the founder of Tan & Loom. She started the company in 2018 when she moved back to her home city Kolkata, India and saw the enormous surplus leather stock at her mother’s boutique. The family exported premium leather handbags to the European market in the 1980’s, but remained a boutique to sustain fair practices and control on quality. She decided to use the surplus leather to create a small collection using indian handloom fabrics. The brand grew and moved towards vegetable tanned leather, whilst using surplus chrome leather in less than 20% of the collection. Combining handloom and leather was a natural choice for Rukmini, in her effort to create minimal yet unique bags by supporting the local handloom industry.

Crafted in

Meet the Makers

The brand works with 2 master craftsmen within a team of 50 who have been with the parent company for over 3 decades. The craftsmen Ibrahim Bhai & Hamid Bhai oversee the process and only work on master samples. All craftsmen are full-time employees and are compensated with wages 20% higher than the minimum wage rate.

The Process

With the use of vegetable tanned leather and local fabrics from artisans and weavers, the brand follows an ethical and community focused approach to development. It can take 6 weeks to create a single sample and once created a team of 4 craftsmen working full-time can craft a batch of approximately 10-12 products in a week. This varies depending on the design, style and various other factors.

Standards

The brand uses vegetable tanned leather that uses natural “tannins” to dye the leather, making the process cleaner while sourcing only locally handmade fabric to encourage the handloom industry.
