The Founders

Core by JSI is an initiative by creative director Sayesha Sachdev, a graduate from Central Saint Martins where she studied fashion communication. Being raised in the industry made her realise how wasteful and unethical the truth behind fashion really was. It led to the conceptualisation of CORE. What started as a passion project with the aim to change the narrative, soon turned into a business. Sayesha is now involved in every decision and knows all her suppliers and artisans personally. In our conversation with her, she highlighted her vision to make sustainable fashion accessible to more people through creative use of fabrics and designs.

Meet the Makers

The makers, tailors, pattern cutters are all from rural parts of India - West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana; mostly up North since the studio is located in New Delhi. The label aims to support local artisans within their vicinity by paying a fair wage, providing clean, hygienic and safe working conditions.

The Process

The brand specialises in transforming natural, plant-based and recycled textiles into finely tailored contemporary clothing. With its heavy involvement in the production of its fabrics, where they learn and continuously innovate, the brand lives by it’s design philosophy of ‘less is more’ with a focus on zero waste patterns or reusing waste to make other upcycled products.

Standards

Core is run by women and focuses on providing employment to other women. All their fabrics use eco-friendly designs and are BCI, GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade and Organic.

Community Focused

Improving livelihoods of marginalised communities who have suffered the most with the advent of fast fashion, either through artisanal collaborations or simply giving enough back.

All packaging is plastic free or biodegradable. Opting for alternative packaging also implies higher costs for these brands.

Reduced Carbon

Low or minimal use of power, hence reducing their carbon emissions. These brands have opted for slower yet more expensive greener methods of production.
